Gilani Collection Sculpture Art by Evelyn Michaelides - Hand-carved, organic-shaped limestone sculpture art.

Intuitively hand-carved and handmade, Evelyn's sculpture art evokes a sense of calm; playing with light, shadow, and texture.

Evelyn embraces the raw beauty of her medium, allowing each sculpture to emerge naturally through the carving process. This intuitive approach fosters a deep connection between the artist, the material, and the final form.

Evelyn was nominated for the prestigious Omnia Art Prize 2025 for her sculpture Poima.

She continues to develop her practice, exploring new ways to express balance, movement, and serenity through sculpture.

We caught up with sculpture artist Evelyn Michaelides to find out more about her work.

How did you get into creating sculpture art?

Sculpture found me quite organically. I originally started with ceramics as a creative hobby, and during that time my teacher encouraged me to experiment with limestone. The connection was immediate. There was something compelling about the rawness of the material; its weight, texture, and quiet imperfections, that drew me in. I love the process of taking a solid block of stone and transforming it into something expressive and imperfect.

Tell us about your materials and process; do you have shapes in mind when creating a new design?

I primarily work with limestone in soft cream tones, and occasionally hebel in grey when it compliments the aesthetic of a space or interior. I like to leave traces of imperfections within the sculpture, sometimes even preserving signs of natural weathering.

While I often begin with an initial feeling or direction, the final design tends to evolve throughout the process. Some ideas begin as sketches, while others form visually in my mind before being translated into sculpture for collectors and interiors. I’m particularly drawn to abstract minimalism, exploring simplified forms and quiet, sculptural shapes. Once a design is developed, it is replicated, allowing the design to carry across different interiors, while preserving the essence of the original piece.

How has your art style developed over the years?

It started out very one dimensional, very much what was on paper to stone. Now I sculpt and each piece can be displayed from any angle, upright, sideways, even upside down, no limitations. The sculptures have softened over the years, becoming more rounded, minimal, and the occasional cut-out or negative space as the piece evolves.

When not sculpting, how do you like to spend your day?

I’m not a person of routine except for my morning walk; which is where I find a lot of my inspiration from nature and being outside in the crisp air. And my oat latte.

From there my days can unfold quite loosely; I can end up at a farmers market on the weekends with friends, visiting my favourite clothing stores for a little fix, trying new eateries, or reading books. And how could I forget Christmas movies, even when it’s not Christmas!
